Minera Escondida is the copper mine with the largest production in the world, representing 8 percent of the world's copper production. It is located in the north of Chile, in the Atacama desert, 170 kms. southeast of Antofagasta. It produces copper concentrates by floating sulphurated mineral and copper cathodes using a lixiviation process of oxidised mineral. Cerro Colorado, which literally means Red Hill, is named for the reddish tone given by the high copper concentration of the area. Cerro Colorado is a BHPBilliton enterprise (the world's largest company dedicated to diversified resource management). It produces approximately 125 thousand tons of high quality copper cathodes each year using a biolixiviation and electro-gaining osmosis process.
